As Goes Juneau so Goes Sioux City

Iowa party leader to endorse Obama

By Thomas Beaumont at The Des Moines Register

Iowa Democratic party chairman Scott Brennan plans to endorse presidential candidate Barack Obama today, leaving Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin as the state's only superdelegate to have not endorsed in the race.

Brennan, a Des Moines lawyer, plans to make the announcement at a 10 a.m. News conference today at the state Democratic headquarters in Des Moines, party officials said.

Brennan's endorsement will give Obama seven of Iowa's 11 named superdelegates, the term for party and elected officials granted special national delegate status.

The others backing Obama are: U.S. Rep Bruce Braley, Gov. Chet Culver, State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald, U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, Democratic National Committee member Richard Machacek, and Deputy State Party Chairwoman Sarah Swisher.
