US Marines To Be Deployed To Oz.

Australia has agreed to host a full US Marine task force in the coming years, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced at a news conference with US President Barack Obama in Canberra.
She said about 250 US Marines would arrive next year, eventually being built up to 2,500 personnel.
The deployment is being seen as a move to counter China's growing influence.

Snip

Forgive me for asking but, if countering China is so critical to Australia why doesn't it Kangaroo and Wallaby up  for the job with her own resources? Why is Australia acting like some third-rate, cash strapped, developing nation?  Why is it so hard to find two thousand five hundred strapping lads and lasses to defend the interests of Australia Fair? It is hardly a hard luck case, as it has a GNP of 842 PPP Dollars to support its own trigger pullers. Did I miss something did the land that gave us a manly man's version of football, and world class Rugby suddenly go Emo on us? Did Oz replace Mel Gibson and Russel Crowe (ok Crowe is a stretch as he actually a Kiwi) suddenly become a nation of Metro-sexual Justin Biebers while we were not looking?

This is not a trivial deployment, a Marine Task Force is some serious firepower. It is an air wing, an artillery component, and more than likely a few non-trivial US Navy Ships sailing the ocean blue-- just because they can.

China is rightly miffed by these developments.  Add to the mix that this is the area of the highly contentious Sprightly Islands and the US is big footing around in a very dangerous Geo-strategic area. I sure hope the president knows what he is doing here, this could go south in hurry.

I have a bad feeling about this. What other toys are we going to distribute in the area? What other bits of escalation are on the table? A follow on of a Naval Base in Oz is a likely next step; and then perhaps a Air Base? When you hear about the communications station you will then know we are all in on this strategy. There is probably a Navy Communication detachment already folded in this deployment. Yikes, the more I think of this, the less I like.
