Binyamin Netanyahu attacks Arab spring uprisings

Binyamin Netanyahu attacks Arab spring uprisings

Israeli PM claims 'Islamic, anti-western, anti-liberal, anti-Israeli, undemocratic wave' vindicates tough stance with Palestinians

Binyamin Netanyahu has launched a scathing attack on uprisings in the Middle East, saying that Arab countries are "moving not forward, but backward" and support from the US and European countries was naive.

The Israeli prime minister said the Arab spring was becoming an "Islamic, anti-western, anti-liberal, anti-Israeli, undemocratic wave".

Speaking to the Israeli parliament amid renewed protests and violence in Egypt, Netanyahu said concessions to the Palestinians were unwise in a period of instability and uncertainty in the region

Somehow you just knew Bibi was going to go here. Read the rest of the article because you will be hearing these talking points at a Fox near you very soon. What is really revealing is how Bibi and his unhappy Likudnik& campers default to a pro-dictatorship ideology. It is quite stunning to see the leader of the Jewish state be so unapologetically anti-democratic. It is depressing him going straight to FUD, assuming that only the worst will happen. The uprising in Egypt does not necessarily end in a Muslim Brotherhood / Jihadi theocratic state.

It could if the US follows the Israeli leader's advice though. A Israeli-US lead cabal that re-installed a military dictatorship could easily lead to a violent revolution that installs a Islamic state informed by radical Salafalist ideology. Such a state would be a mortal enemy of Israel and would work hand in hand with Hamas radicals to make Gaza an open wound for Israel. It might even abrogate the Camp David peace agreement and start girding for a fourth Egyptian-Israeli war.

I guess Bibi or his political heirs would see that as an "I told you so" moment. I do hope Israel comes to her senses and dumps this poor excuse for a Prime Minister. He is nothing but bad news for the Jewish state. This man is anti-democrat through and through. He is a dangerous ideologue, who sees force major as the only solution for the vexing problems of the near east littoral. This attitude will slowly transform Israel into just another Near East Tin-Pot dictatorship; but one with nuclear weapons.

US questions its unwavering support for Israel

The Guardian:

"There are questions that rarely get asked in Washington. For years, the mantra that America's intimate alliance with Israel was as good for the US as it was the Jewish state went largely unchallenged by politicians aware of the cost of anything but unwavering support.

But swirling in the background when Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, arrives in Washington tomorrow to patch up relations with the White House will be a question rarely voiced until recently: is Israel ‑ or, at the very least, its current government ‑ endangering US security and American troops?

Netanyahu would prefer to be seen as an indispensable ally in confronting Islamist terror. But his insistence on building Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem, which is causing a deep rift with Washington, is seen as evidence of a lack of serious interest in the establishment of a viable Palestinian state. That in turn is seen as fuelling hostility towards the US in other parts of the Middle East and beyond, because America is perceived as Israel's shield."

Sweet Jesus Make it Stop

Israel's prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, today dismissed a UN proposal for an international commission to investigate last week's assault on a flotilla of aid ships.

Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary general, proposed a commission of inquiry headed by the former New Zealand prime minister Geoffrey Palmer, who is an expert in maritime law. The commission would include representatives of Israel, the US and Turkey. All nine activists killed in the operation were Turkish; one held joint US citizenship.
Ban discussed the plan with Netanyahu, who later briefed party colleagues on the call, saying: "We need to consider the issue carefully and level-headedly while monitoring Israel's national interests."
Israel would not react or take decisions under the pressure of events, an official who was present at the meeting said.

Will someone please bind and gag Bibi Netanyahu before he causes any more damage to the Middle East in general, and to Israel specifically?

Iran has warned that it could send Revolutionary Guard naval units to escort humanitarian aid convoys seeking to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza – a move that would certainly be challenged by Israel.

Any such Iranian involvement, raised today by an aide to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would constitute a serious escalation of already high tensions with Israel, which accuses Tehran of seeking to build a nuclear weapon and of backing Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls Gaza.

“Iran’s Revolutionary Guard naval forces are prepared to escort the peace and freedom convoys that carry humanitarian assistance for the defenceless and oppressed people of Gaza with all their strength,” pledged Hojjatoleslam Ali Shirazi, Khamenei’s personal representative to the guards corps.

The threat came as the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, dismissed a UN proposal for an international commission to investigate last week’s commando assault on aid ships, in which nine people died. Another aid ship, the Rachel Corrie, carrying Irish and other peace activists, was boarded peacefully by Israeli forces on Saturday, escorted to the port of Ashdod, and its passengers deported.
Netanyahu has defended Israel’s right to maintain the blockade by arguing that without it Gaza would become an “Iranian port” and Hamas missiles would strike Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Israel’s undeclared aim is to weaken or bring down the Hamas government.

Iran continued to exploit the “freedom flotilla” affair to lambast Israel. Its foreign minister, Manuchehr Mottaki, told the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in Jeddah on Sunday that Israel’s crime was “another instance of the Zionist regime’s brazen and merciless treatment of Muslims, especially the oppressed Palestinian people.”

Mottaki also called for a UN resolution condemning Israel. The security council is discussing imposing new sanctions on Iran because of its failure to meet international demands over its nuclear programme.

Yup, MV Mavi Marmara was a fine bit of stratgery on Israel’s behalf. Bibi Netanyahu ladies and gentlemen, a one man wrecking crew– of the national security interests of the Jewish State.

Somewhere in the fetid swamps of the Potomac River, they are tearing their hair out at the roots. That is to assume that any one at Foggy Bottom has any hair left after most senior policy makers coiffures  went up in flames when the MV Mavi Marmara  incident began.  Our Most Sacred Lady of the Tastefully Appointed Pant-Suite must be in a most un-beatific mood. No Drama Obama is getting schooled in the issues of how to deal with Drama Queens. Washington is out of sorts since it can not follow the wisdom of Zymurgy's First Law of Evolving System Dynamics: Once you open a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is to use a larger can. There is no can big enough for this collection of worms dear readers; at least there is not one in stock. Obama and his SoS are burning the midnight oil to construct that container as we speak.
