Charter School Hired Pedophile, Mom Says

STOCKTON, Calif. (CN) - A nonprofit charter school system that has received financial contributions from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Oprah Winfrey has been named in a child sex-abuse lawsuit.

The child, suing through her mother, says she was molested by her art teacher last year while attending California-based Aspire Schools' Benjamin Holt academy, and that the physical education teacher facilitated the abuse by letting them spend time alone together when she was supposed to be in gym class. She was 11 years old during the four months of the alleged abuse

Mechanic Had a Screw Loose, Customer Says

Courthouse News Service

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CN) - A disgruntled Bridgestone mechanic purposefully left the oil drain plugs and engine mount bolts loose in a woman's car and signed his handiwork in a literal "hate" note to the company on the oil filter, the customer claims in county court.
Rahshel Claire Ann Rice's lawsuit says Bridgestone Retail Operations dba Tires Plus was negligent in hiring its employee and should have known he was emotionally unstable.

Say What?!?

A couple who prayed and rubbed olive oil on their sick infant rather than seek medical care for the dying boy was convicted Thursday of manslaughter, becoming the latest members of an Oregon faith-healing church to be blamed in their child's death. Dale and Shannon Hickman, both 26, are members of the Followers of Christ Church, which has a history of rejecting medical care for congregants' children and relying instead on techniques such as prayer and anointing the sick with oils.

Five other church members have been convicted in Clackamas County for crimes related to the rejection of medical care for their children, said Greg Horner, chief deputy district attorney.

The Hickmans' conviction on second-degree manslaughter charges typically requires a mandatory minimum sentence of six years in prison. But because of a religious exemption in state law at time of the crime, the couple likely will face no more than 18 months in prison and a $250,000 fine, The Oregonian reported.

So the state of Oregon has a carve out for manslaughter if you do it as part of your idiotic cultist faith? What is this, some kind of bizarre kind of diminished mental capacity exception?

Lindsey "Dr. Strangelove" Graham & War with Pakistan | Informed Comment:

'via Blog this'

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a major proponent of the idea of a US perpetual war, now wants conflict with Pakistan. He told Fox News Sunday,
“The sovereign nation of Pakistan is engaging in hostile acts against the United States and our ally Afghanistan that must cease. I will leave it up to the experts, but if the experts believe that we need to elevate our response, they will have a lot of bipartisan support on Capitol Hill…”
The comment came after the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff accused the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence of backing the Haqqani Network, which in turn is accused of having attacked the US embassy in Kabul.

...

Here are some problems with Graham’s startling suggestion.

HPV and vaccination: one blogger’s obsession

HPV and vaccination: one blogger’s obsession

: "I think I'm mildly obsessed with the HPV vaccination and the resistance to it. The whole thing is a perfect storm of important issues for me: science and skepticism, feminism, public health policy, sexual health, religious delusions, the power that folk beliefs have over human choices, emotional vs. rational decision-making, and the ideological conflict between reality-based policy and aspirational policy. (Not that I think that conservative aspirations towards a sexual system where every human being has one other they touch in a sexual way---including hand-holding and kissing---and no more is a good aspiration. It's creepy.) I wish the conflict over this vaccine got more attention from wonky sorts, who I think are mildly wary of the sex thing, because it's really a perfect example of the various forces coming into conflict in our culture."

John Boehner, “Socialist?!?”

It is outpatient day in Ohio-08 as a TEA Party candidate goes after Mr. Tobacco Checks for being insufficiently loony-tunes.
I am not making this stuff up: http://bit.ly/ndYDsY
David Lewis, a 26 year old Tea Party activist believes the man he is mounting a primary challenge against, Speaker of the House Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), is a “socialist.”
Appearing on Fox’s Your World with Neil Cavuto, Lewis stated that the reason he has decided to challenge Boehner is because he voted to fund Planned Parenthood and for a bill that would have overturned President Obama’s health care reform law.
“Well, John Boehner is a socialist. I’m not calling him names,” said Lewis, in response to Cavuto’s rebuttal that the bill Boehner voted for was already doomed. “Here is someone that refuses to phase out Social Security.”

Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult | Truthout

Goodbye to All That: Reflections of a GOP Operative Who Left the Cult | Truthout:

'via Blog this'

To those millions of Americans who have finally begun paying attention to politics and watched with exasperation the tragicomedy of the debt ceiling extension, it may have come as a shock that the Republican Party is so full of lunatics. To be sure, the party, like any political party on earth, has always had its share of crackpots, like Robert K. Dornan or William E. Dannemeyer. But the crackpot outliers of two decades ago have become the vital center today: Steve King, Michele Bachman (now a leading presidential candidate as well), Paul Broun, Patrick McHenry, Virginia Foxx, Louie Gohmert, Allen West. The Congressional directory now reads like a casebook of lunacy.

Pastor upset after officer uses Taser on him - News Story - WSB Atlanta

Pastor upset after officer uses Taser on him - News Story - WSB Atlanta

A local pastor told Channel 2 Action News he didn't deserve to be shocked by an officer when he came to his sons' aid.

The pastor and his sons were all arrested and charged with disorderly conduct during a traffic stop on Chapel Hill Road in Douglasville last month.

The Rev. Kenneth Freeman said that's when an officer shocked him twice for no reason. "I was totally embarrassed," he told Channel 2’s Tom Jones. "I'm starting having pain back there and on my arm as well. That situation there... it shouldn't have never happened.

Does any Police Department actually train its officers in the proper use of these things? Something had to go terribly wrong for a pastor to get zapped, unless the pastor was the "wrong" skin color.

Sunday Photo Stream For September 11, 2011; Point Reyes, CA

http://www.nps.gov/pore/index.htm

Point Reyes, California is where parts of the horror movie "The Fog" were shot. Summertime is when the fog happens the most. Late September and October bring a little more sunshine, but not much. The area claims to be one of the most foggy parts of the Americas, if not the foggiest. With forty mile an hour winds not uncommon, Point Reyes lighthouse is different kind of travel destination. Bring a slicker and layers of warm cloths. Summer is just a theory in Point Reyes.

Random Thoughts On September 11 2011

Ten years. It is an curious number. For most citizens of the US, something that happened ten years ago is “history;” that is, it happened so long ago as to be irrelevant. But for someone who lives and breaths the historical narrative, ten years past is current events.

So what to make of the ten years since September 11, 2001 and now? Anniversaries are always fraught.  Anniversaries that fall on a Sunday, when there is little else to divert our attention, are even more drenched with melodrama. There are important considerations that should be reviewed a decade after 9/11/01; unfortunately they are getting drowned out by maudlin overacting by the usual suspects. It will be an extended wallow in schlock journalism, long on sloppy heart tugging, short on substance.  This is a shame because we really do need to look how 9/11/01 allowed bad actors to change our nation for the worse. By exploiting September 11, 2001, these bad actors were able to pass a slew of laws that stripped away many civil rights. For years the Police State enthusiasts were proposing changes in statues that shredded the protections of the 4th , 5th , 6th, 7th, and 8th Amendments of the constitution.  By using fear, Dead Eye Dick Cheney and incurious George set up a new Union, conceived in authoritarianism, and dedicated to proposition that the President of the US is an elected king; a king with more power and less accountability than Louis XIV, the Sun King.

With these new powers, Dick And George  went on a not-so excellent adventure of breaking and entry (sneak and peek, warrantless wiretapping, FISA,) perjury (the case for the Iraq War), kidnapping (extraordinary rendition), assault and battery (enhanced interrogation / torture), and murder (the Iraq War.)  What is even more galling is that not only were the duo of Bush and Cheney never held accountable for their rampant lawlessness; their policies were continued and “normalized” by the next President.

I wonder if any of the numerous remembrances of 9/11/01 will ever get around to mentioning how the tragedy was used to pervert the very essence of what the US stands for?

Before our nation was even a nation, George Washington made it clear that torture was not acceptable. This was a huge statement of moral and ethical substance. The nation that was not born yet, that was, in fact, desperately fighting for its very existence, refused to accept the standards of the day. Washington was going to show not only the British, but the whole of Europe, that a higher standard of ethics was not only possible, but was going to be part of the warp and woof of the nation he and others proposed to create. For over 200 hundred years the US stood by the standard that Washington set. Even in the Hobbesian struggle that was WWII, the US refused to allow torture to become standard military policy.

That record was tossed away like rotten garbage after 9/11/2001. What was once done on an ad hoc basis, and only in dire need, became set policy. Persons with only the most tangental connections to the hijackers were whisked away to foreign lands to be abused, beaten, tortured, and broken. Sometimes these peoples only connection was to be in wrong place at the wrong time. Often, they were just ratted out by people holding a grudge against them. Time after time, interrogators found out that supposed “high value targets,” were just poor shlubs, who had no connections what-so-ever with any terrorist organization. Sometimes these people died in captivity because no jailor wanted to admit that they had made a grievous error.

Some may try to excuse the Cheney-Bush-Obama torture regime by claiming that 9/11 changed everything. In way they are correct. 9/11/01 changed the level of degradation, corruption, perversion, and degeneration ordinary US citizens permitted in their government. We drank deep from the waters of fear, brutishness, ignorance, and folly.  We allowed our Democracy to degrade further into an unaccountable authoritarianism. We covered ourselves with shame. How do we reverse this? How do we find our democratic soul again? How do we do follow Washington again, instead of mau-mauing him?

There are no easy answers. In point of fact,we got in this mess by accepting facile answers to difficult problems. Far too many tried to cover their fear by the pretense of being “hard boiled,” “tough,” and “unsentimental.” Cowards torture; fools torture; knaves defend torture; bullies revel in the vicarious thrill of knowing we torture. But even worse are the human jellyfish that allow torture to continue because they don’t want to deal with the political blow-back that returning to our former humane standards would incur. Nothing points out the deterioration of our political class than when a Constitutional scholar and law professor continues the barbaric policy of his predecessor out of political convenience and cowardice.

For Barack Obama, the Constitution is an intellectual play thing. It is debating tool and utterly plastic in its meaning. By seeing all sides of a Constitutional issue, Obama accepts none. Obama’s brilliant mind can alway find a justification for the most heinous and unconstitutional of acts. Thus, the Constitutional Law Professor is shipping out “high value targets” to the tender mercies of Somali guards at black site gulags in Mogadishu. Not to worry, it is all out-sourced by the CIA, so it really doesn’t count. Besides, Barack is much more careful about the people who get sucked into these prisons to be horrifically abused, honest injun.

That is the depressing state of affairs ten years after 9/11/2001. I again wonder if anyone will bother to mention how deep we have drifted into the rabbit hole. It is possible that when Freedom Tower is finally completed, it will be a ironic marker in how much freedom we have lost. OBL may be resting with the fishes, but his dark legacy lives on.

Naked mans leads Longview police on chase.

http://bit.ly/pjnspN

A 22-year-old man was taken into custody Saturday afternoon after running around naked and fleeing Longview police officers after being tased, authorities said.
Kasey Mattson, 22, whose last known address is in Kelso, was spotted coming out of an apartment on the 700 block of Florida Street at 3:45 p.m. with no clothes on and displaying odd behavior.

Snip

So let me get this straight, running around naked is not considered odd behavior by itself in Longview, Washington?

Libya And Congressional War Powerlessness.

With the regime of Gaddafi soon to bombed out existence at Bani Walid and Sirte by   NATO air power, it is more than proper to look at the institution that had nothing to do with this story; the US Congress.

The Congress was MIA from Libya from day one of the revolt. This was not by accident, it was by choice. There is a reason that the only contribution Congress provided was the usual partisan tantrums provided by the minority of the Democratic left and the majority of the Republican right. The left rounded up the usual suspects of Kucinich and Conyers, the odd dogs barking. The right was more vigorous and larger in its opposition, if also more juvenile.

The attack by the usual suspects of the Elephant Party was so predictable, and so transparently partisan, as to be both futile and embarrassing. It was an utterly cringe-worthy performance. There are tantrums thrown by spoiled five-year-olds that have more merit than the objections mouthed by Republican leaders about Libya.

I have no idea how we fix the supposed equal branch of government that the Congress is supposed to be; the rot is so deep. I hate to channel Dan Carlin so often, but, you gotta do what you gotta do. Congress fails at its responsibility for war fighting because it wants to. The leadership failure is deliberate and depressing. Carlin is correct in supposing that Congress has abandoned its prerequisites because it prefers to have the Executive take the blame if a military action goes south. Note that even the Republicans, bent on destruction of what they see as the illegitimate Presidency of Barack Obama, still did not do anything to really halt the Administrations involvement in the overthrow of Gaddafi.

This is telling because this was one time the power of the purse could have been used to short-circuit Executive over-reach. The Obama excuse that Libya was only a “kinetic action,” and not an act of war was transparently ridiculous. The Obama action was regime change from the get-go, and only willfully ignorant Obama-bots argued otherwise. The air action was all war, all the time. But here is the thing, it could be stopped. It could be stopped because halting the bombing would put no US troops in danger. A credible threat by Congress on funding would at least forced Obama to be far more consultative with the Legislative branch then he turned out to be. The whole process of getting involved with Libyan regime change was driven by the Hamlet of the White House and his interactions with the NATO allies of the UK and France.

At the beginning the usual suspect were yammering about a “No Fly Zone” in Libya. Obama, as his want, went into full contemplation mode; dithering, pondering, musing, considering inputs, consulting, and dithering a bit more. All the while our NATO allies fuses were getting shorter and shorter. France, the UK and Italy were near apoplexy when Obama finally moved. Yet in this entire enactment of Rodin’s “the thinker,” Congress was not consulted once. The demand to fish or cut bait did not come from John of Orange, or Harry Reid, but from Nick Clegg, the PM of the UK, and Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France. That, gentle reader, is a ridiculous state of affairs. The vote for war in Libya was made by a two-thirds majority of three world leaders; the UK and France voted yea, whilst Obama, again, voted present.

And the Congress of the US, the governmental organ that is supposed to have the war making authority, what did it do? Why it did not even bother to use the powers invested in it by the war powers act; it just stood to one side, to kibitz, to position itself on the “winning” side. Even the right-most Obama-hater in the Congress had enough cover to retroactively support the US mission in Libya. The behavior of John McCain illustrates this point better than anything else. His only apparent complaint with Obama’s egregious usurpation of Congressional prerogatives is that Obama did not bomb more often, and with larger payloads.

McCain’s behavior was not as much of outlier as one would think. His fellow Elephants have also positioned themselves in a way that  they could still bash Obama, whilst still be on the “winning” side no matter how Libya plays out. By abandoning any real accountability or responsibility for foreign policy, both Republicans and Democrats can play endless partisan reindeer games, with no real consequence to their reelection prospects. Politically it is a wonderful place to be. Institutionally, it makes Congress worse than useless in its role of checking excessive Executive power.

With the Congress stead-fast in its refusal to do the job it was created for, I have no idea how we, the people, find a way to check executive over-reach in foreign affairs. The War Machine, the Web  Of War, continues to grow, with no check in sight. Ignoring George Washington, there seems to be no end of foreign entanglements our Executive will engage in. It is case of imperial over-reach that no one can stop, or at least the general public is unwilling to call a halt to.

It is that general public that will have to put and end to this Executive over-reach, to kill this elected King we have created. It will take a public action that will make the protests over Vietnam look like small beer in comparison, if such an event is possible. Otherwise the Executive will hit a wall where intervention becomes totally impossible; and that is a very bad place for our nation to be. That is a place of national collapse and possible implosion.
Dan Carlin is right about our nation devolving into something sinister, something deeply un-American. He is right about how our two party system is accelerating that process. Our two party system is utterly corrupt, shot through with pay for play; how do we fix that? How do we stop the wars of choice that our corporate masters insist we fight for their profit? I have no clue dear reader, I only know we better get busy, or soon we all will be living like paupers in a authoritarian dystopia that will serve only the lucky few.

This is another example of the serendipity that road trips provide. I googled a trip from San Jose, CA to Point Reyes, CA and got a rout that took us via a fly-speck town near Navato, CA. Claiming a population of sixty souls, Nicasio is rural as rural can get. The downtown consists of maybe ten buildings. But what Nicasio lacks in size, it makes up in charm. Bikers of both description, the pedal pushers and the motorcycle riders, make pit stops at the general store / restaurant. I can speak for the homemade clam chowder, if nothing else. The chowder is a scrumptious gut bomber / fat pill well worth the four bucks per cup they charge.

Wat Did You Vist This Labor Day?

All photos are for Personal Use Only. No commercial use without the permission of copyright holder and the artists of Wat Dharmararam Buddhist Temple Association.(http://www.cambodianbuddhist.org/)

Wat Dharmararam Buddhist Temple Association
3732 E Carpenter Rd
Stockton, CA 95215
(209) 915-1164

The Temple has ambitious plans to extend its sculpture garden. Having completed its grotto depicting the Buddha's life, it now plans to create Nirvana (no, not the rock band; but the state of Buddhist bliss that one can achieve once enlightenment is achieved and our mortal bodies are shed) in concrete.

The site is just off CA-99 in not-so-prime land that fronts the freeway. The monks, with the help of the believers have been slowly nibbling away at the available land, one five acre parcel at a time. They now own fifteen acres and from the look of things could expand further.

The statues were created by the local monk, a former architect, with the help of the believers. The whole affair has a DIY, naive vigor that more formal sites lack. The whole Wat is a labor of love and despite the surroundings quite charming. Word of warning, there is not tree one in the grotto itself, and the sun can beat down mercilessly. Bring lots of water and sunscreen, plus an open mind. Also plan other activities in Stockton if you go to the Wat. A determined power walker could blow through the grotto in seven minutes flat; the wife and I lazed though it in a hour.
